When everybody wants to use the same road
Chapter Nine
Chains of the People
In which one road is made wide enough for everyone, and a pump fills a fair with coins
When a game of digital cats called CryptoKitties arrived on Ethereum in December 2017, the road clogged and fees climbed. Most builders answered by adding new lanes above the road — layer 2s.
Solana chose another way: keep one road, and make it wide enough for everyone. Its builders had a motto for it — increase bandwidth, reduce latency.

Letters Sent Ahead
Because everyone shares the same clock, everyone knows in advance which validator will lead each slot. So Solana does not keep a waiting room of transactions: a system called Gulf Stream sends each letter straight ahead to the next leaders, before their turn begins.
When a block is made, another system, Turbine, cuts it into small parcels and passes them from validator to validator, like a chain of riders. In 2024, a second, independent validator client called Firedancer, built by Jump Crypto, began joining the network — a spare engine for the carriage.

The Pump at the Fair
On Christmas Day 2022, in the depths of the Solana winter, a dog-themed coin called BONK was handed out for free — and the fair came back to life. Then, in January 2024, a small team launched pump.fun, where anyone could create a coin in under a minute for almost nothing.
Each coin starts on a bonding curve: the more people buy, the higher the price climbs. If enough buy, the coin graduates to a public market. Millions of coins were pumped this way, and most soon fell flat. In July 2025, pump.fun sold its own PUMP token and raised hundreds of millions of dollars in minutes.

The Fair Becomes a Town
The fairground did not stay a fair. In 2023, Visa began settling USDC stablecoin payments on Solana; in 2024, PayPal brought its PYUSD stablecoin. Wallets like Phantom, markets like Jupiter and phones like Solana Mobile's Saga and Seeker filled the streets.
In 2025 came tokenized shares of well-known companies, tradable around the clock, and in October 2025 the first US exchange-traded funds holding SOL. The idea is old and simple: bring the notebook to everyone — not just to those inside the counting-house.
