The Future Pages

In which the story is not finished, and the reader is handed the quill

Words by the editors

What happens when a community keeps its treasury and its rules in smart contracts? You get a DAO — a decentralized autonomous organization. Members propose ideas and vote with tokens, and the code carries out the result.

DAOs have funded public goods, governed protocols, and even pooled money to bid on a copy of the U.S. Constitution. They are messy and very human — a round table where no one sits at the head.

The Village Well

liquidity pool
DeFi: a well that anyone may draw from

DeFi — decentralized finance — rebuilds the counting-house out of open code. On Uniswap (2018) you trade with a pool, not a person. With MakerDAO's DAI (2017), you borrow against what you lock away. In the DeFi Summer of 2020, these pieces snapped together like building blocks.

Like a village well, the pools are shared. Anyone may draw from them — and anyone may fall in, if they don't mind the edge. Stablecoins, lending, and trading now move billions of dollars every day, all written in the public notebook.

NFTs: a signature in the notebook that says ‘this one is mine’

Most coins are alike — one ether is the same as any other. But some tokens are non-fungible: each one unique, like a painting with its own signature. CryptoPunks appeared in 2017; the ERC-721 standard followed in 2018.

In March 2021, an artwork by Beeple sold at Christie's for about $69 million, and the whole world noticed. Beneath the hype lies a lasting idea: ownership of a digital thing can be proven, and carried from place to place.

The Pages Not Yet Written

to be continued…

Here the ink grows thin. Money that moves at the speed of a message. Shares of the world's companies, traded at midnight. Programs — perhaps even AI agents — holding wallets of their own. Identities that belong to the people who own them.

Some of these chapters will be triumphs. Some will be cautionary tales. All of them will be recorded in a notebook that anyone can read and no one can erase.

The rest of the story has not been written yet. Perhaps you will write it.
